SHIELD ANCHORS
Being similar in design but bulkier than drop in anchors, shield anchors have fallen out of favour in recent times. Where-as drop in anchors require setting by using a tool to physically expand the fastener in place, shield anchors consist of a cylindrical steel sleeve with a knurled or fluted exterior and a bottom plate that is inserted into a pre-drilled hole. Once the anchor is in place, a machine screw is threaded through the center of the sleeve and tightened, causing the bottom plate to expand and compress against the walls of the hole. This creates a tight and secure grip on the material being fastened.
